Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in June

May kicked off the summer season with a bang, with Captain America: Civil WarX-Men: Apocalypse, and The Nice Guys.  Now, it’s time to look at June.  This month looks to be a great mixture of big budget, explosive blockbusters, numerous sequels, and some great indies in between between the chaos.  So here you go, five awesome movies coming out in June you should be on the look out for.

SwissArmyMan1

5 – SWISS ARMY MAN (The Daniels, June 24)

So, I don’t know if I would technically classify this film as awesome, but it is definitely one that everybody needs to see.  I saw this movie at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and it was one of the most divisive movies I have ever seen at the festival.  Some people loved it, some people walked out.  I was somewhere in the middle.  If seeing Paul Dano ride Daniel Radcliffe like a boogie board while Radcliffe’s explosive farts project them forward is your kind of movie, then you’ll dig it.  Just know that this is the most unique movie I’ve seen in a long, long time.  Check out my full review right here for more information about this indie gem.

CentralIntelligence

4 – CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE (Rawson Marshall Thurber, June 17)

So, Kevin Hart is getting slightly annoying.  He’s already made one of the worst films of 2016 with Ride Along 2 and it looks like his schtick is almost up.  Central Intelligence looks to be a change of pace for Hart.  He looks to be playing the “straight” character and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson looks to be the funny guy, rocking jean shorts and a fanny pack while also kicking ass and taking names.  The comedy looks hilarious, the action looks fun, and The Rock and Hart look to be an awesome duo.

FreeState2

3 – FREE STATE OF JONES (Gary Ross, June 24)

The more trailers I see for this movie, the more excited I get for it.  It does bare similarities to my favorite movie of 2016 so far, The Birth of a Nation, but that isn’t bothering me as much.  McConaughey looks spectacular as well, in a performance that could garner him some awards attention.  I am also looking forward to seeing Mahershala Ali, who is one of my favorite characters in Netflix’s House of Cards, and looks better and better each trailer.  Gary Ross is an excellent director, having made Pleasantville (1998), Seabiscuit (2003), and The Hunger Games (2012), and I think Free State of Jones will be another worthy entry to an impressive filmography.

Conjuring2

2 – THE CONJURING 2 (James Wan, June 10)

The Conjuring (2013) is one of my favorite horror movies ever and one of the scariest movies I have ever seen.  I didn’t think it needed a sequel, but the fact that the Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are back at the Lorraine and Ed Warren and horror maestro James Wan is back at the helm makes me all sorts of excited.  Also, the trailers are scary as hell.  This looks to be more religious than the first one, which can lead to all sorts of horror, especially with this supposed haunted nun that gives me shivers every time I see it.  We are probably looking at the best horror movie of 2016 right here.

FindingDory

1 – FINDING DORY (Andrew Stanton, Angus MacLane, June 17)

Finding Nemo (2013) is a classic.  Anyone who says otherwise, is just wrong.  I know movies are subjective, but whatever, they’re wrong.  Finding Dory looks to be Pixar magic once again, as Ellen DeGeneres reprises her iconic role as the forgetful, yet sweet fish Dory.  This time, Dory is on a mission to find her parents and meets a slew of new characters along the way, along with some from the original.  Pixar has a pretty solid track record when it comes to sequels, and this looks to add to that total.  Finding Dory was my second most anticipated movie of 2016 and has the potential to be not only the best animated movie of the year, but the best movie of the year.
